CULTURAL TOURISM IN BULGARIA

Bulgaria is a unique country with a big variety of possibilities for cultural tourism. Its strategic location on the Balkans makes its history very rich and interesting. During thousands of years, different people, nations, rulers and regimes have left their mark in this area.

These were the lands of the so called “Thracians” and their impressive civilization, the birthplace of Orpheus and Spartacus. After them, the Romans built their spectacular towns here. Later, during the medieval Bulgarian Empire, this was one of the most culturally developed places in Europe. Then, from the Ottoman period are preserved some of the oldest mosques on the Balkans. Finally, the communist regime in the second half of the 20th century has also significantly influenced the culture and the architecture.   

Because of these facts, nowadays Bulgaria has a serious number of remnants from different epochs and cultures. Some of the most popular examples of the local rich culture and history are:
 
  • The oldest golden treasure, found in Varna Necropolis (6 500 years old) or some of the many others Thracian treasures
  • The ancient Roman town Serdica in Sofia as well as the Roman theater and stadium in Plovdiv
  • The medieval capital of Bulgaria - Veliko Tarnovo and its imposing fortress
  • Some of the impressive monasteries, that have preserved our national identity during the Ottoman rule. The most significant one – the Rila Monastery
  • The revival old towns of Plovdiv and Koprivshtitsa
  • The old town of Nessebar on the Black Seas side – UNESCO heritage place
